We are beyond excited to announce the winner of the 2020 Annual Broadside Competition!! NOVA CYPRESS BLACK’s “How to Make a Playlist” will be available on broadside soon. It will be designed by Patrick Vincent and handset and printed using the historic Goldsmith Press housed on campus at Austin Peay State University. This collaboration is made possible by the Center of Excellence in the Creative Arts as well as the time, skill, and artistry of faculty in the department of Art + Design. NOVA CYPRESS BLACK (they/them) is the quiet one yo mama warned you about. This choreopoet writes, dances, & teaches from a Black queer womanist lens. They’ve been a recipient of fellowships from Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Poets House, The Poetry Project, Willow Arts Alliance & Cave Canem. Their work as graced the pages of a few publications such as The Shade Journal & Yemasse Journal. Their full-length choreopoems include “another goddamn lesbian movie / a chorepoem.” (summer 2017, NYC) and “somewheres: a world-in-progress” (spring 2020, NYC). This MFA dropout currently minds their business in Atlanta, GA.
