2019 Zone 3 Literary Awards

Zone 3 is pleased to announce the winners of its annual fiction, poetry, and nonfiction contests: Matthew Fiander for his story “Five Variations on Parnell’s Blues” (Fall 2019); Sarah Fawn Montgomery for her essay “In Praise of the Plains” (Spring 2019); and Jasmine Dreame Wagner for her poem “Sandy” (Fall 2019).

The Zone 3 Literary Awards are selected by the editors. Selections are made from all works published in the magazine that year. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Matthew Fiander’s work has appeared or is forthcoming in the Massachusetts Review, South Dakota Review, Yalobusha Review, TIMBER, Hobart, Jellyfish Review, Exposition Review, Fiction Southeast, Waccamaw Journal, Flash Fiction Magazine, and elsewhere.

Sarah Fawn Montgomery is the author of Quite Mad: An American Pharma Memoir (The Ohio State University Press), and the poetry chapbooks Regenerate: Poems of Mad Women, Leaving Tracks: A Prairie Guide, and The Astronaut Checks His Watch. Her work has been listed as notable several times in Best American Essays, and her poetry and prose have appeared in various magazines.

Jasmine Dreame Wagner is an American poet and multimedia artist. She is the author of On a Clear Day (Ahsahta Press); Rings, winner of the Kelsey Street Press Firsts! Prize; and six chapbooks. In 2019, she was awarded a WPR Creative Grant from Harvard University.

Zone 3 Press sponsors two book competitions: The Zone 3 Press First Book Award in Poetry and The Zone 3 Press Creative Nonfiction Book Award. Winners receive $1,000 and publication of their book, as well as an invitation to give a joint reading at Austin Peay State University with the contest judge.
