to wake

coyotes calling…so many, wailing out
of sync with each other like dark energy
echoing off rocks through earth
from ghana, gaza, kharkiv,
warbled through magma, oceans,
soil, into the howling bowels of canines.
their lungs and throats
dry as sun baked dusts of obliterated cities.
how is it now, prairie wolves cry,
a few feet from open windows
exposing themselves like sirens
and suddenly lilacs are blooming
in late october, bees are chewing gum
from concrete, hurricanes drowning
appalachia.

what will it take, ducks divebombing cars,
grasshoppers attacking cats,
mice growling.
